Head of Sales

Our Timber Systems division is the leading provider of Timber Frame construction solution to the Private, Social / Affordable and Commercial / public works sectors. We operate throughout the United Kingdom and have two manufacturing plants, Witney Oxfordshire and Aberdeen Scotland, with regional offices in Glasgow and Manchester.

Reporting to the Sales Director, you will be a key member of the Divisional Board responsible for setting out and delivering the business plan to support overall delivery of the Group Corporate Plan. You will have the opportunity to use your people and commercial management skills to provide clarity and confidence of delivery of the business plan to the Divisional management team and divisional staff.


  • Work with the Sales Director to develop and lead the UK new business sales team (BDMs) to meet and exceed the UK sales plan;
  • Develop and lead the delivery of critical elements of our UK sales plan;
  • Deliver and report against agreed Sales targets, by region and by market sector primarily through new customers but also developing existing customers;
  • Working with the BDMs to ensure they are supported to meet targets and maximise revenue opportunities through focus, direction and clear targets;
  • Identify and develop commercial relationships with contractors and developers that lead to sales through new customers;
  • Develop collaborative approaches that may lead to new markets and/or increased sales;
  • Review and feedback on competitor activity (product, pricing, promotion) market trends and statistics to highlight gaps and opportunities to ensure Stewart Milne Timber Systems are competitive in the marketplace;
  • Work closely with the Estimating team to ensure that tenders are accurate, robust, delivered on time and competitive;
  • Work with other operational teams to ensure our approach to our clients is seamless, collaborative and focussed;
  • Play a role in the management and development of the wider business as a head of department, working with the management peer group.

Essential Technical Expertise

  • Experienced leader of sales teams to build and shape a dynamic, engaged and motivated sales team by helping to plan and direct work, appraising performance and resolving issues
  • Able to develop and successfully deliver on sales plans for business growth to maximise performance and increase profitability
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and team building skills including managing a UK multi-site-based team
  • Demonstrate ability to build strong business relationships to develop positive business development networks, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrate a strong knowledge and understanding of the UK housebuilding / construction market; timber frame product experience would be highly advantageous
  • Track record of successfully identifying new commercial/sales opportunities and capitalising on these
  • Expert in negotiating profitable, large-scale sales/commercials with contractor/construction organisations
  • Advanced communication and influencing skills and the ability to convince through personal credibility
  • Track record for delivering budgets and producing and delivery sales forecasts
  • Goal/target-oriented and able to lead through a team to achieve these goals
  • Ambitious, self-motivated and ability to work independently
  • Strong, pragmatic team player with a ‘can do’ attitude to problem solving and removing barriers
  • Highly organised and able to cope with multiple large-scale responsibilities
  • Entrepreneurial and creative in acquiring strategic partners and leveraging resources
  • Driven to succeed and take the team along with them
  • Proven ability to write reports, report on revenues v targets and forecasts, explaining variances and developing robust and successful plans to bridge any revenue gaps
  • Highly numerical
  • Proven negotiation skills at a senior level
  • Maintenance of sales volumes, product mix to meet manufacturing capacity requirements
  • Robust forecasting skills, working with sales team and planning department
